The neighborhood Friedrichshain in Berlin
Friedrichshain is one of the 12 boroughs in which Berlin is divided. Each of this boroughs has its own history and personality. The central borough, Mitte, is also the historic center and is now the part of the city where huge corporations and banks have their representations; this has an obviously impact on everyday live, so that the main part of this burough seems to close and go to sleep after office hours. Don't expect to find real life in Friedrichsstrasse, Unter den Linden and Museumsinsel after closing hours.
Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is, together with Neukölln and Prenzlauer Berg (more in the past), the most dynamic, artistic and young burough. Specially Friedrichshain is young, very young. The number of new inhabitants is still increasing, and the age of those new Friedrichshainer is between 18 and 30 years. The percentage of inhabitants with migration background is much lower than in Neukölln, although you will always find a so called "Kiosk" selling beer, cigarettes and chocolates at 5 in the morning.
Friedrichshain, being part of the inner city of Berlin, is perfectly connected to the rest of the boroughs by metro, streetcar, underground and S-Bahn. This is important: every borough has its own centre and attractions, so you will not only visit the museums at Museumsinsel, but also the Bergmannstrasse in Kreuzberg, Landwehrkanal between Kreuzberg and Neukölln, the Gedächtniskirche in Charlottenburg and so on.

You will find plenty of information about the borough Friedrichshain in the wikipedia entry Friedrichshain.
On Saturday, you will have the opprotunity to buy fresh products on the market right in front of the house on the Boxhagener Square.
On Sundays, there is a big and interesting fleamarket.
